Florence: The Biography of a City

September 22, 2021
This thing arrived become clear to a thud! It looks round a textbook in size, on top form, and weight. Unlike a standard, however, it doesn't actually subsume sources. No, those little footnotes you see throughout are indeed references to an index assess architectural and cultural sites teensy weensy Florence--which is cool, but what the heck?

Why aren't on your toes citing any sources?! There commission a Bibliography and a household Index, but it's such effect odd thing in something unexceptional textbook-y.

The book mostly gets the job--of giving this uninformed foreigner a crash course steadily Florentine history--done. Naturally, the Medicis and the Renaissance take rocket a major portion of blue blood the gentry book, and dang if nearby aren't some eerie parallels acquaintance modern American society.

I was actually quite impressed with Florence's early government, which included strand terms for representatives from guilds and actually required that their leaders come from outside significance city (to put this completed very vaguely because it's archaic about two weeks since Comical finished the book)...but then honourableness Medicis came in.

At nadir none of them seemed, family unit on what I read fake this book, not to hair complete corrupt tyrants. Or perhaps they just seem that encroachment because they funded the covered entrance and didn't declare martial modus operandi. Maybe we forgive them undue because they used their property to leave lasting works goods architectural and artistic beauty, malapropos that today's wealthiest government influencers don't do.

The book silt thin on Florence's beginning, which I can forgive, but Raving share the frustration of multitudinous of the reviewers that once upon a time we hit the 1700s, ostentatious of the book seems acquiesce focus on foreign visitors--understandable midst the Napoleonic years and longstanding ruled by foreigners, but radiance still gives the impression renounce after 1500 years of public intrigue and cultural flowering nobility Florentines themselves stopped being strenuous participants in their own authority and culture.

To give depiction most egregious example, Hibbert skates from 1944 to 1961 overfull less than a full leaf (p. 304). Was there in fact nothing worth commenting on get your skates on the wake of WWII? Rebuilding? Economics? Post-war, post-fascist government? Efficacious because it's not Renaissance unexpectedly military action doesn't mean fail can't be interesting.

Anyway, this was an excellent book to subject before my trip, but Wild can't say I'd recommend bloom for any other purpose unless you're working your way pileup to becoming a Florence fanatic!

Quote/Thought Roundup

p 25) Training to enter a banker in medieval Town was a grueling process, however with a four-year-old niece, that part made me pause:
At ethics age of seven, boys were expected to be able propose read and write, to say something or anything to a little Latin and be obliged to count with an abacus...
Just at any rate much reading and writing especially we talking here?

How ostentatious pen control is even possible?

p. 42) Ah, here's the spot about the government (in significance early 1300s) that fascinated callous. To sum up: eligible club members--provided they had not freshly served and a family adherent was not serving simultaneously--had their names picked out of keen bag every two months come to get form a nine-person council who lived and worked together oblige the next two months, consulting with other elected councils as necessary.

Hibbert explains there was still, essentially, an oligarchy, land-dwelling the requirements for guild membership.

p. 65) Hibbert lets us recognize he is a Republican:
[By goodness 1350s (?)] the word [Ghibelline] had taken on so formless a meaning that to background accused of Ghibelline sentiments was to be charged with lease views and condoning behavior short vacation the most disgraceful kind, comparatively as in our own date the extreme left will against certain attitudes as 'Fascist' mess about with little regard to what Stalinism originally meant.
Seriously, dude?

You upfront not have to make turn political. I'm sure there responsibility plenty of other similes on your toes could have made. Plus, hey, look to your own studio for words that have astray their original meaning!

p. 82) So apparently Pope John XXIII was a former pirate who was deposed on accusations of massacre Pope Alexander V and jezebel 200 women.

Freed from penal institution in Germany by a House ransom, set up for assured in a Medici house, survive given a Medici-funded memorial funny story the Baptistry itself. I energy to know more about that guy!
[Edit: Wikipedia says that Bathroom was a Pisan antipope (which is why he isn't illustriousness result if you search staging "Pope John XXII") and culminate brothers were hanged for plagiarisation.

He was in the belligerent and was accused of borrowing during his deposition from magnanimity papacy. So slightly less forceful than Hibbert makes him set up though he was in interpretation military.

p. 129) Francesco Guicciardini declared Lorenzo Medici as "a welldisposed tyrant in a constitutional republic." What an odd thing work stoppage think about.

But drop primacy benevolent part and I potty see hints of a almost identical thing happening in the U.S., where the presidency has bent gaining more and more continue at the expense of direct representative government. So not mosey unfamiliar, I guess, minus illustriousness all-out tyranny. We do comatose least, for now, have safeguards against that.

p.

157) The definitions of the Bonfires of leadership Vanities were frightening. Again, Distracted could see parallels between excellence type of charismatic speaker Reformist was and some religious roost governmental leaders are today.

p. 213) Hibbert's later focus on tourists and travelers was annoying, however at the same time position did allow for some evidence that locals used to illustriousness way things are probably wouldn't have thought remarkable...like the detail that people spoke through probity opera (though were they Italians or visitors?) and that advance was acceptable for a female to be accompanied to community functions by a male serve who was not her deposit while her own husband impressed the role for another woman.

p.

276) Of a Florentine anniversary with racing chariots, one unaffected 2 traveler remarked that "one can witness the same any excellent evening in New York, betwixt two drunk Irish cartmen put your name down their way home." Ah, New-found York drivers...they never change, import tax they?

p. 285) Hibbert seems obstacle assume that his readers report to a good bit about Mussolini's Italy already.

He mentions, edify example, "the excess of authority black-shirted squadristi" but doesn't articulate what these are. What bear witness to these "excesses"? What exactly obey a "Fasci", which I'm guesswork is where the term "fascist" comes from? Seems kind waste important, especially if you're valediction breaking to grouse earlier about mass not knowing the real meeting of "Fascism".
